white refined shea butter

Refined Shea Butter Bulk

Our bulk refined Shea Butter is great for cosmetics and soaps. After shea butter is extracted from the Shea nut the natural butter is filtered to remove any impurities, resulting in a creamy off white color and an ultra high quality pure product. The refined shea butter also has less odor, making it shea butter of choice for the soap making and personal care industry. This is definitely one of our best sellers.  This product comes from Burkina Faso, Africa.

virgin african shea butter

Virgin Unrefined (certified organic) Shea Butter

Our Virgin Unrefined African Shea Butter is extracted from the Shea nut and left completely unrefined. Because of the lack of refinement, Bulk African Shea Butter has a pale yellowish color and has the typical odor normally associated with Shea Butter.   It may also contain sediment, small amounts of shell, plant fiber, etc.  This shea butter comes from Burkina Faso, Africa and is certified organic.

Shea Butter Benefits

Pure Shea Butter first became popular in Africa where it is widely used in cooking and medicinal purposes. Eventually it made its way to the west as more people discovered its amazing emollient qualities. Shea Butter has a high level of non-saponifiables and other qualities that makes it a popular ingredient in many cosmetic supplies, lotions, and other skin care products.

Shea Butter can improve skin elasticity, which has made it popular with both men and women. Today it is used as an essential ingredient for belly butters and stretch mark creams.

More than that, though, Shea Butter can also block the sun’s ultraviolet rays, so you will often find it as a major ingredient in sun block products, lip balms, and lip gloss. It can also be used as an anti-inflammatory and humectants which makes it very useful in medicinal ointments and creams.

Types of Shea Butter

At Bulk Apothecary we offer a couple different kinds of Shea Butter to fit your exact needs.

Refined Shea Butter – Our bulk refined Shea Butter is most often used for cosmetics and soaps. The process to refine the butter involves extracting it from the Shea nut and filtering out any of the impurities. This results in a creamy off-white color and an extremely pure product. There is also less of an odor, which is why refined butter is the normal choice for the soap making and personal care industry.

Unrefined Shea Butter – We also sell butter that is left unrefined. This gives it a pale yellowish color and has the typical odor normally associated with Shea Butter.

Please note: Our 55 lb blocks of organic naturally refined and unrefined shea butter are certified organic. Our smaller sizes are not yet certified organic. We are in the process of having them certified.

Cocoa Butter has very strong scent, and very yellow. It didn't work for me.

    Bad Odor

Posted by Eldridge Bruno III on 5th Sep 2024

I decided to purchase this shea butter because it was more affordable than my usual supplier. Unfortunately, the strong odor of the product ended up costing me time and money, as I had to halt production and reorder from my previous supplier.

Grainy Grainy Grainy - Not for cold process

Posted by Michelle Ward on 4th Apr 2023

When I purchased the 7 pounds of the unrefined shea butter I thought I would be getting blocks of product. It came in a bucket and it is the grainiest shea I have ever worked with. I make cold process whipped body butter and this product made it impossible for me use it. I discovered this after I made a large batch of lavender body butter and had to trash it because it was runny, grainy, and wouldn't whip. I am in a time crunch now for an event and will not have what I need to finish my product in time. Do not buy for cold process!

    Unrefined Shea Butter

Posted by Jenny Smith on 4th Feb 2023

I've been using unrefined shea butter for almost 6 years now, but this is the first time I've ordered from BA. The smell is horrific. It should have kind of a smokey smell, but this was more like a rotting damp cave. The product itself was super grainy which suggests it has melted and solidified numerous times which makes shea butter loose a lot of its best qualities. I contacted customer service and they basically told me I didn't know what I was talking about and could return it at my own expense. Will not buy again.

    Container and Aroma

Posted by Ailis on 15th Dec 2022

Two issues here, first of all, the container it comes in is a plastic jar with a lip. Therefore, it's very difficult to get a hard butter out of the jar! Unless you melt it completely in a microwave, you are out of luck, and melting in a microwave can be detrimental to the product you're trying to make. I don't own a microwave, and trying to melt in a double boiler was a disaster. Furthermore, the aroma of the unrefined shea butter indicated to me a low quality shea butter. It is not supposed to smell bad. For the price, the quality should be better.

    ORG Unrefined vs ORG Refined

Posted by Lisa Rosellini on 13th Jan 2022

I have always enjoyed using the organic refined shea butter, but I bought the unrefined when the other was out of stock and... omg the smell is way overwhelming to me. It was unpleasant to open the pail and it effected the resulting scent of my products, which was very disappointing.
