Witch Hazel, also known as winderbloom in North America, is a liquid derived from witch hazel shrubs or smaller-sized trees. Most commonly, the substance is used medicinally on the skin for various uses. There are 3 known species of witch hazel, one of which is found in Japan. It is a simple, natural product that can do wonders for the skin.
Most Common Uses:
Witch Hazel is most commonly used as an antiseptic. It can be applied directly to the skin to treat acne, puffy eyes, varicose veins, redness, scaring, itching and to seal moisture into the skin. Many people find it useful to use daily as a skin refresher/toner as the product refines pores.
A more detailed look at the uses:
Wax- After waxing, you can apply witch hazel to irritated skin to reduce redness/inflammation and help prevent ingrown hairs.
Acne- When applied to oily skin, it is a natural way to treat moderate acne and acne scaring.
Varicose Veins- Soak a towel in witch hazel and put it on your visible veins. If done daily, it can significantly reduce to visibility of the varicose veins.
Itching- Apply directly with a cotton ball to mosquito bites or other itchy areas. It will also help reduce itch in skin rash.
Antiseptic- Apply directly to open wounds to help heal and cleanse the area. It will kill bacteria. Commonly, witch hazel is used in tattoo parlors to cleanse the skin and prevent bruising.
Sore Throat- Gargling a few drops of witch hazel with water will help reduce inflammation in the throat.
Moisturizer- Witch hazel removes oil from the skin, but it also locks in moisture. It is great in the winter months as an acne treatment as it won’t dry out the skin.
Bleeding- Applying to a wound that is still bleeding will help stop the bleeding. This can be done with very minor bleeding.
Hemorrhoids- Mixing with water and applying to the affected area with a cotton ball will help treat hemorrhoids.
-On skin, dab a cotton ball in the witch hazel and rub onto the affected area.
-For the throat, mix witch hazel (3-4 drops) with warm salt water and gargle/spit.
-For varicose veins, soak towel in witch hazel and put towel onto the affected area for roughly 20-30 minutes a day.
As always, it is important to consult with your doctor before ingesting anything new. In some cases, it may cause minor skin irritation. Make sure you don’t have any allergies to the product. Pregnant women or women who are breast-feeding should also consult with a physician before using or ingesting.

Witch hazel from Bulk Apothecary is a great find! I use this in my hand milled healing soap in place of water and it works great! My husband is a tattoo artist and this is a staple for him as well.

Witch Hazel is so good after shaving, when your hemorrhoids hang heavy, and you just want that refreshing smell I associated
with Essex, Conn. I keep a bottle in the car for antiseptic use as as well in my sports bag and all the bathrooms in my house and office before I retired. Bless you guys. These opinions are my own. Obviously, consult a dermatologist for more details.
