It?s that time of year. The time of year when everyone you talk to has had or is currently fighting off a cold. The chest congestion, stuffy nose and sinus pressure complaints are running rampant around here and no one seems to be safe!

Although it may seem as if we?re all going to face some form of it (either ourselves or our kids) we can prepare a line of defense for when the stuffy noses start: vapor disks.

A nice steamy shower with a vapor disk can work wonders when it comes to clearing congestion and easing stuffy noses and sinus pressure.

OH! And they?re super easy to make J

You?ll need:

2 cups Baking Soda (Sodium Bicarbonate)

Up to 2/3 cup Water (enough to make a paste)

Eucalyptus Essential Oil

Rosemary Essential Oil

Lavender Essential Oil

Soap Mold (optional)

Start by mixing together the water and the baking soda. Add the water to the baking soda in small amounts, mixing and adding until a paste is formed.

It will look like this when you?ve added enough water. Thick and sticky.

The next few steps can be done two ways:

You can add the essential oils now, stir well and allow the mixture to air dry overnight in the molds?.

?OR you can pour the unscented mixture into the molds and bake at 325 degrees for about 15 minutes. Once cool, add the essential oils to each disk with a dropper.

Either way I make them, I always pop them out of the mold and allow them to dry on a rack for a few hours before packaging or use.

To use:

-Place one in the bottom of your shower

-Make it nice and steamy in there

-Breathe deep and say goodbye to cold and congestion symptoms!

Feel better, Bulkers!

  1. I just wanted to drop a note and let you know how much I am enjoying your website! The recipes are really inspiring, and the way you have organized all of these products is really intuitive. I started searching for beeswax and now I am thinking about trying some of your skincare recipes. Thanks again!

  2. Hi. Can anyone guide me on how much essential oils to use? I have a sick kid and I think she could benefit from these. I’m going to try the cold and congestion rub too! Thanks for the great recipes, love your site!

    1. Everyone tends to prefer a different strength of scent. 100% pure essential oil tend to be very strong, so we recommend starting with just a few drops and you can always add more if you feel they are too weak!

  3. Just finished making these. Very simple to make. Will try one in my morning shower if they are dry ☺️

Hope to try other recipes soon. Great ones here

    1. Hi Rhonda!

These should last for more than one shower. Of course, how long it lasts depends on the frequency and length of showers for your household.
