Homemade Natural Mouthwash

As with many store bought products these days, typically loaded with chemicals, artificial flavors, and artificial colors, mouthwash is no different. Seems a little counter-intuitive to fill your mouth with less than great ingredients when the purpose of using the products in the first place is to flush OUT the bad stuff, right?

So why do we do it? With so many natural oils, extracts, and herbs available that contain healing and antibacterial germ killing properties, why do we reach for the bottle full of blue stuff?

Simple. For convenience.

We are people that live for conveniences that make our lives easier. Drive thru dinner so that we don’t have to get out of the car. Drive thru car wash so that we don’t have to get out and scrub ourselves. Spray wrinkle release so that we don’t have to drag out the ironing board…you get the picture. Sometimes we’re willing to sacrifice things that are better for us in favor of things that are easier for us. I’m no exception to this (ever tried the frozen veggies that steam in their bag in the microwave? They rock.).

But what if going au natural was easy too? Wouldn’t you opt for the healthier version if it was just as simple? Well, I have great news! It IS just as simple!

Homemade herbal mouth rinse combines herbs that cleanse, heal, and fight germs in a healthy way.

Homemade Natural Mouthwash

What it contains and why:

-Peppermint essential oil is antibacterial and provides that cool, refreshing flavor that we’re used to tasting in mouthwash. It leaves the mouth feeling and smelling clean and refreshed.
-Tea Tree Oil- Another great germ killing natural oil
-Baking Soda- Neutralizes bad breath
-Vodka- Kills germs and bacteria. This recipe really fights the germs, if you can’t tell
-Stevia- To sweeten the flavor a bit

How to mix it up:

Combine 8 ounces of filtered water, 1 teaspoon baking soda (aka Sodium Bicarbonate), 4 drops peppermint essential oil, 4 drops tea tree essential oil, 5 drops liquid stevia, and 1 teaspoon of vodka in a lidded container.

Shake to blend all ingredients and use as needed.

Be sure to shake the mixture before you swish and spit each time.

There you have it. Now how can you argue choosing a product for convenience when making your own, natural version is SO quick and easy?
